Why we do this
Our ethos is strongly inspired by good stewardship of the land, ensuring we protect what we have and foster positive growth.
Australia has a serious feral animal problem that has catastrophic impact upon our native animal populations. It also costs our primary producers dearly if left unchecked. Our services are designed to keep the feral populations under control, thereby relieving the predator pressure from desirable species.
We have strong anecdotal evidence that our services have allowed increases in native animal populations and lambing percentages when persistent predator removal programmes are implemented.
Removing feral pests can also reduce damage to land and the environment, as well as reducing the risk of animal borne diseases.
Meet the owner, John
The Owner and Primary Operator at BPS, John Bylund has over 50 years experience in vermin control and firearms expertise, with 4 of those years as a professional shooter.
John Bylund started Bylund Precision Services after retiring from a 30 year career as a manual arts teacher.
In addition to his work as a watch-maker and photographer, John is experienced in delivering high precision services.
John has high ethical standards with a passion for protecting the environment, especially our smaller native creatures that tend to be the most vulnerable to feral predators.
John has 'runs on the board', with a well documented record of vermin control. In the past 5 years he has recorded the removal of 340 foxes, over 2000 rabbits and 20 pigs.
John's wife Janine has the role of administration and finance and their Graphic Designer son James is responsible for branding and website development/maintenance.
Gear & Equipment
Firearms
At BPS, we believe that firearms are the preferred tool for dealing with most vertebrate feral animal problems. Used correctly, they are the most precise, safe, humane and selective method. The ability to handle and use these tools skilfully and efficiently comes from years of use. We also believe that trapping and poison baiting have their place and can work in conjunction with shooting to achieve the best outcome.
Vehicles & Transport
At BPS we embrace new ideas and technologies with enthusiasm. However in the last 10 years, vehicles have been built with more electronic safety devices that are simply a nuisance in a shooting vehicle. Apart from a multitude of electronic beeping noises they also have running lights, all of which effects their stealth. We have elected to stick with a trusty old Rodeo//Isuzu diesel ute, simple and reliable.
Thermal, Night Vision & Traditional Optics
Recent advances in thermal and night vision technologies have been a game changer in controlling vermin. Essentially it allows the shooter to see in the dark. The products that were prohibitively expensive are now more affordable, with clarity and features unheard of 10 years ago. However they are still a major investment and their use requires a whole new set of skills.
Traditional Optics
Telescopic sights still offer the highest quality visuals compared to Thermal and Night Vision. As such, they remain the optic of choice for daytime use, and can still be utilised in low-light scenarios with the aid of a spotlight.
Thermal Optics
Registers heat signatures and can provide amazing detail, even at distance, and can be used in some foggy conditions This is the most expensive option. Less useful when there are many heated objects in view.
Night Vision Optics
'Night Vision' optics see using projected Infra-Red light from a scope mounted torch. Though the torch adds weight, bulk and expense, these scopes are cheaper than thermal, allowing better use in both night and day target identification. They are less useful for dusty or foggy conditions.
